And keeping your tech cool is about more than comfort\u2014as temperatures rise, performance can suffer, charging may get slower or stop, various components might be disabled, and devices can become unreliable.<\/p>\n<h3>How Hot Is Too Hot?<\/h3>\n<p>You might be surprised by the recommended operating temperatures for Apple gear\u2014whether you\u2019re talking about an iPhone X or a MacBook Pro, the company recommends staying under 95\u00b0 F (35\u00b0 C).<\/p>\n<p>Such temperatures happen regularly throughout the summer. Even in cooler climes, the temperature in a parked car in the sunshine can easily hit 130\u00ba F (54\u00ba C) in an hour and rise higher as time passes. And no, cracking the windows a couple of inches won\u2019t make a significant difference. We hope you\u2019re already thinking about that with regard to children and pets, but as you can see, tech gear should also be protected. Apple says its products shouldn\u2019t even be stored\u2014turned off\u2014at temperatures over 113\u00ba F (45\u00ba C).<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just cars you have to think about. Temperatures in homes and offices without air conditioning can also rise higher than electronics would prefer, and that\u2019s especially true for computers that stay on most of the time and aren\u2019t located in well-ventilated areas.<\/p>\n<h3>What\u2019s the Danger?<\/h3>\n<p>First off, remember that all electronic devices produce their own heat on top of the ambient heat in the environment, so the temperature inside a device can be much, much hotter than outside. The CPU in an iMac can hit 212\u00ba F (100\u00ba C) under heavy loads.<\/p>\n<p>Temperatures higher than what components are designed for can have the following effects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chips of all types can behave unpredictably as increased thermal noise (electrons vibrating more) causes a higher bit error rate. Because electrical resistance increases with heat, timing errors can also occur.<\/li>\n<li>Lithium-ion batteries discharge well in high temperatures, but the increased rate of chemical reactions within the battery will result in a shorter overall lifespan.<\/li>\n<li>As devices heat and cool, the uneven thermal expansion of different materials can cause microscopic cracks that can lead to a variety of failures over time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some heat-related problems are temporary, so when the device or component cools down, it will resume working correctly. But others, particularly drops in battery life\u2014are irreversible and particularly worth avoiding.<\/p>\n<p>When a Mac gets too hot, it will spin up its fans in an attempt to keep its internal components cool. If your Mac\u2019s fans are ever running at full tilt, first quit apps you aren\u2019t using, particularly those that might be CPU-intensive and thus creating a lot of heat. If that doesn\u2019t make a difference, restart it to make sure the problem isn\u2019t some rogue process. If the fans come back on at full speed quickly, shut it down and let it cool off for a bit. In the worst case, an overheated Mac will start acting unpredictably or crash.<\/p>\n<p>iOS devices don\u2019t have fans, so they employ other coping mechanisms. If your iPhone or iPad gets too hot, the device will alert you.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.computeradvantage.us\/v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Too-hot-iPhone-960x1024.jpg\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.computeradvantage.us\/v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Too-hot-iPhone-960x1024.jpg 960w, https:\/\/tcn.tidbits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Too-hot-iPhone-281x300.jpg 281w, https:\/\/tcn.tidbits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Too-hot-iPhone-768x819.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tcn.tidbits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Too-hot-iPhone-1080x1152.jpg 1080w\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"640\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/640;\"><\/p>\n<p>Apple says you might notice some of the following behaviors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Charging, including wireless charging, slows or stops.<\/li>\n<li>The display dims or goes black.<\/li>\n<li>Cellular radios enter a low-power state. The signal might weaken during this time.<\/li>\n<li>The camera flash is temporarily disabled.<\/li>\n<li>Performance slows with graphics-intensive apps or features.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you\u2019re using Maps on an overheating iPhone for GPS navigation in the car, it may show a \u201cTemperature: iPhone needs to cool down.\u201d screen instead of the map. You\u2019ll still get audible turn-by-turn directions, and the screen will wake up to guide you through turns,<\/p>\n<h3>How to Keep Your Tech Cool<\/h3>\n<p>For the most part, keeping Apple devices cool just requires common sense, since you\u2019d do the same things for yourself.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As Apple\u2019s specifications recommend, avoid using devices when the temperature is over 95\u00ba F (35\u00ba C). If you can\u2019t avoid it entirely, keep usage to a minimum.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t leave devices in cars parked in the sun for long periods of time. If it happens accidentally, let the device cool before using it.<\/li>\n<li>Provide good ventilation so air can cool the device. Don\u2019t block ventilation ports in the back of desktop Macs, and don\u2019t use Mac laptops in bed, propped on a pillow, or under the covers. It can be worth vacuuming dust out of ventilation ports every so often.<\/li>\n<li>Never put anything on the keyboard of an open Mac laptop.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid stacking things on top of a Mac mini.<\/li>\n<li>Monitor the temperature of server closets.
