If you’ve been tracking the tech news this week, you might have caught a significant update. In an exclusive interview with the Wall Street Journal published Wednesday, June 17, 2026, Apple CEO Tim Cook highlighted a reality facing the entire technology sector: retail price increases are becoming unavoidable (view article, behind paywall).

A “100-Year Flood” in the Tech Industry

The driving force behind these upcoming price adjustments isn’t just standard inflation—it’s an unprecedented squeeze on the fundamental building blocks of modern technology: memory and storage chips.

Right now, the world is experiencing a massive surge in demand for high-level computing power, largely driven by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure and enterprise data centers. AI data centers are devouring these advanced semiconductor chips at such a staggering rate that component costs have skyrocketed.

To put this in perspective, Tim Cook remarked that he has never seen anything like this in any area in 40 years, comparing the memory shortage to a “hundred-year flood.”

Why This Time is Different

Apple is famously known for having one of the most resilient supply chains in the world, a hallmark of the Tim Cook era. Historically, the company has possessed the financial leverage to absorb massive external shocks—such as recent global tariffs—without passing those costs along to consumer sticker prices.

But this time is different. Because the AI boom has completely upended the global supply-and-demand balance for component manufacturing, the price of memory chips has undergone unsustainable spikes. Cook noted that while Apple has aggressively tried to shield its customers from these rising costs, the situation has officially become unsustainable for the manufacturer to absorb alone.

What This Means for You

Typically, Apple holds off on retail price changes until entirely new models are officially announced. However, because these circumstances are unprecedented, the industry standard no longer applies. Due to the scale of this shortage, we are anticipating the very real possibility of price changes hitting current, existing product lines.

Because we don’t know exactly when these global adjustments will filter down to retail inventory, the smartest strategy is to purchase sooner rather than later. We do know that our current inventory of MacBooks, iMacs and iPads will not be affected by price increases.

If you have been planning a technology refresh in the near future we recommend considering your options now.

How to Protect Your Budget

You don’t need to panic-buy, but strategic planning could save you money. Here is how we recommend navigating the upcoming weeks/months:

  • Assess Your Current Setup: Check the health of your existing devices. Are they lagging on recent software updates, or is the battery life starting to decline? If a machine is nearing the end of its lifecycle, accelerating your upgrade timeline by a few months is a smart fiscal move. Feel free to call us or bring your computer directly into the showroom for a quick health check so our local service experts can help you evaluate its remaining lifespan.
  • Consult Your Local Experts: You don’t have to guess what specifications you need. Our team is here to provide personalized, one-on-one guidance to ensure you buy exactly the right amount of power and storage for your specific needs—without overpaying for extras you won’t use.
